Mosaic Arts Online is thrilled to have professional sculptor and professor, Maria Sarmiento, here to work with “Pal Tiya,” a unique and easy to use concrete-clay like sculpture material. Maria Sarmiento shares all of her experience and knowledge for creating a variety of sculptures that can be used for one of a kind mosaic art substrates.

Pal Tiya material does not require a mold or a kiln. You will learn how to apply Pal Tiya to simple and easily accessed materials in order to create abstract shapes, animals, and other pieces. You will even learn to use Pal Tiya to transform small objects into life size materials.

In this online course, Sarmiento uses a snail as the subject for demonstrating three different methods for creating an object. There are different ways to build forms with Pal Tiya, and she gives tips and techniques for using each one.

Pal Tiya is a proprietary blend of materials, and if used properly it is incredibly strong and versatile. With Pal Tiya you will no longer need extra muscle to lift your concrete sculptures but you will be able to mosaic them with ease. Pal Tiya is an exterior and interior grade product that can withstand extreme temperatures.

Sarmiento will guide you through the step by step process, and describe the tools necessary to create with Pal Tiya. Next, she will show you how to create three different forms of a snail using a variety of core materials. This will allow you to choose the appropriate one for your piece. Once you have your form, she will show you the proper mixing instructions for Pal Tiya. This unique material acts like concrete, but works and feels more like clay. These properties make it very easy to mold and shape.

Pal Tiya comes in two different quantities, and can be ordered from the website supplied on the PDF with the tools, materials, resources.

Once you have learned how to create your sculptures, Maria will then demonstrate a few “do’s and don'ts” for creating your mosaic with a variety of tesserae on a 3D object. She does not complete a mosaic art project in this course, but she will inspire you to create your own. This product is so versatile, that you can even add new layers at any time without additives.

Maria Sarmiento

Maria Sarmiento is a passionate, versatile, and highly motivated artist and educator with extensive experience teaching sculpture in Fine Arts and Art Foundations in design universities. A native of Colombia and resident of Atlanta, Georgia, Maria’s work is inspired by nature and ancient cultures (pre-historic and pre-Colombian), and evokes spirituality as well as a sense of transcendence.

Maria describes her work as a medium to express inner spiritual growth. She connects with common symbols of cultures and explores emerging forms in diverse materials, and transforms traditional symbols into her own. Her sculptural art includes different methods such as cast metals, cement, Paltiya, steel, paper, and recycled materials. Maria’s background includes broad knowledge and expertise in artistic glass, from stained, to cast, fused and now Mosaic.

Maria’s currently teaches art workshops and her past teaching assignments include Kennesaw State University, Georgia State University, The Art Institute of Atlanta, Metro Academic Studies, and Sarmineto Studio LLC.

Maria received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia and her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Universidad de Bogota Jorge Tadeo Lozano in Bogota, Colombia. Her leadership appointments include Board of Directors and Chair of the Recognition Committee and social media for Mid-South Sculpture Alliance (MSA) and Co-Chair of the 2015th Mid-South Sculpture National Conference.
