Mosaic Arts Online is thrilled to present Rachel Sager's "Color Cartography in Micro-Mosaic." This is your chance to become your own, personal mapmaker!
Every map is an interpretation. Some are practical. Many are practical and beautiful. This mosaic map project embraces the purely artistic side of cartography.
You will be inspired to look to geology and topography as your guides in this map making adventure.
Using a custom created barnwood frame of The Lower Forty-Eight States of America, you can build your own, bespoke map of America. The nature of the frame that is also a substrate, that is also a composition, ensures your success. Whether you choose to build your map with filati or some other fun material, you will end with a clear interpretation of this clearly recognizable outline.
In this course you will learn:
- How to choose your filati palette
- How to cut the filati to the proper lengths
- How to mix Apoxie Sculpt
- How to set the filati in a bed of the Apoxie Sculpt (height is so important)
- How to work within the walls of a composition
- How to use brass and copper ribbon to define sections
- How to create a cohesive and color balanced composition
There is nothing quite like spending time with Rachel as she shares the nuances of her contemporary micro-mosaic technique.
Every section is chock full of tips and tricks that will add to your mosaic knowledge. Rachel loves to introduce ways for the new mosaic artist to be successful in the miraculous medium of mosaic. There are some particular new techniques that the artist working in filati and malmischiato will be thrilled to learn.
This course is project oriented and has been planned on a small scale (the frame is under 10” total) so it can be portable. Take it with you on vacation! Or work at your kitchen table if you don’t have an official studio space.
This course is fun and encourages you to follow your own path within the borders of the composition. You will end with a dense, rich tapestry of color that is ready to hang on the wall.
