Mosaic Arts Online is thrilled to have Erin Pankratz on board and sharing her technical and artistic approach to tinting mortar and making substrates. Erin's signature, colour rich, approach to adding color to her mosaic art has created quite the buzz in the mosaic community. Now that she has brought these techniques to an online platform, people around the world, can learn how she does it and create their own style with these skills.
Erin shares in the Promo, and the personal interview, how she got started in mosaics, but more importantly how these techniques were created and why. Erin's diverse art background shines throughout this online course. Students will learn a variety of art elements, including color balance, a bit of colour theory, composition of color, and so much more.
In this course Erin talks about how and why she likes to use both powder and liquid tints. She explains how to get the proper load ratios when mixing the tints with the mortar, what mortar she uses and why. You will see, up close, how much water to use to get the desirable consistency for the tinted mortar. Erin also teaches her inventive multi-colored, layered, and sometimes textured, technique for the underpaintings she uses on her substrates.
This online course is twenty sections full of information. It is the same information as taught in her in-person workshop. The benefit of having this online course is that you will have an up close bird's eye view of her hands working and teaching. You will also have the luxury of watching the sections over and over again, as you can stop and restart at any point in the course. Once purchased, this course is yours in perpetuity and you will have unlimited login access.
Erin Pankratz has brought her well known unique and creative style of making her colorful "dots" to Mosaic Arts Online. This course has all the same information she teaches when it is a live in-person workshop. Erin has a sister online course that teaches how to create colorful substrates that these "dots" are then adhered to through a mosaic process. Once you have learned how to create the substrates this online course is a wonderful accompaniment and is full of information that takes you the student farther in your understanding of color, composition, balance and other art elements. All of these techniques can be used for mosaic art in a variety of directions. Erin teaches a few different techniques for how she creates her under-paintings on her substrates before she dives into the lessons on creating dots and how to mosaic with them.
It is recommended to learn how to create Erin's handmade tinted mortar substrates before learning how to create the under-painting and dots in this course. There is an option to buy both of her courses in a bundle in the Mosaic Arts Online library. If you know how to create tinted mortar substrates and want to move straight into learning how to make dots and mosaic with them then this course is for you.

"All of my work culminates from the many different techniques I have studied and have been exposed to my whole life: weaving, dying, printmaking, drawing, painting, casting, sculpting, and mosaic. My work always has an element of time, marking changes, and shifting perspectives. The work is not a suspension of one moment in time, but the accumulation of moments within one piece. Using seemingly meandering lines of individually cut coloured tile woven together to create layers of meaning throughout my work."
