Carol Shelkin is incredibly talented and one of the most sought after teachers in the mosaic community. We are so excited to be sharing another teaching opportunity highlighting her unique techniques here at Mosaic Arts Online. In this course Carol Shelkin brings her signature “painting with mosaic” technique for the first time to our online platform. Carol’s unique approach to creating her stained glass mosaics through her “painting” techniques have only been taught a few times in live workshops. Now it is available for everyone here at Mosaic Arts Online.

This special technique of creating an underpainting of the image gives you a wonderful blueprint when it comes time to choosing, cutting, and placing the stained glass for your mosaic. Shelkin guides you each step of the way, starting with a presentation on Impressionism works. She explains how the artists of that period used certain colored paints to create illusions of other colors in their works.

After this inspiring and educational presentation, Shelkin dives in to teach several techniques. These include: how to create a line drawing from your image, how to transfer the design to your substrate, and how to paint each area of the image. She will show you how to make the best choices of stained glass for your project, and she will demonstrate her style of cutting and placing her pieces. Carol does not grout her pieces, so cutting each piece to fit is an important element of her technique.

Shelkin will work from a helpful “over hands” view which is one of the greatest teaching tools we can offer here at Mosaic Arts Online. Included in this course are two sections of quiet time where you can watch Shelkin continue to work on cutting and placing her pieces. Carol does not complete this mosaic during the course. Once enrolled you will have email access for Carol's guidance throughout your process during this course.

Included in this course is a PDF you can download with the image originally painted by Carol for this project, as well as a list of all the tools, materials, and resources for getting started.

The techniques you will learn in this course will allow you to create mosaic art with your own unique style and spin from stained glass in the future.

Carol Shelkin took to art as soon as she was able to hold a crayon. At seven she started attending Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia and it was made clear at this young age that her life would be centered on her passion for art. She continued her artistic direction with studies at Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts and studies in Ravenna, Italy. In time she began to teach and create one-of-a-kind works of art that are displayed in galleries, community centers, libraries, commercial and private, residential settings.

For over 30 years Carol owned a successful arts nursery school, "Carol's House” in Philadelphia, raised her three children along with her husband, JP as she balanced her promise to teach adults at night and work on her personal portfolio in art.

Since 2011, Carol is the owner of Worldwide Mosaic Workshops and Tours taking creatives and art lovers to Costa Rica, Mexico, France, Morocco, Italy and Spain. She is the instructor and tour guide traveling the world, exploring and researching new destinations, and delivering experiences that students will remember for the rest of their lives. Carol also offers other week long and weekend workshops worldwide.

The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Upper Darby Arts and the prestigious Robin Brett Mosaic Scholarship from The Society of American Mosaic Artists honored her with grants and scholarships to create and learn. She is a Founding Member and past President of The Mosaic Society of Philadelphia along with being voted a Master Artisan from The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.

Carol finds a very eclectic approach to surface design placing stained glass and other materials where she, as a painter naturally places paint and balances that with her love of being an art teacher.
