Mosaic Arts Online is thrilled to welcome Katherine England as she teaches her new course “Glass Fusing for Mosaic Art.” Learning to fuse glass can open a whole new world of skills while creating mosaic art.

Glass fusing is the process of using a heated kiln to join more than one piece of glass with another. After learning Katherine’s techniques, you will be able to create a variety of fused glass pieces in a short period of time.

Katherine starts by describing an overview of pieces that can be created by fusing glass. She then covers the proper types of glass that are used for fusing. Not all stained glass can be used for this process, so she goes into great depth discussing some of the qualities used for glass selection. For instance, she defines the different C.O.E. (Compatibility of Expansion) numbers which identify the different types of glass that can be mixed due to their thermal compatibility of expansion. Once you have your glass ready for fusing, Katherine demonstrates how to cut the glass and create simple projects by layering glass on top of glass before moving them safely into the kiln.

Katherine discusses the three different types of fusing: tack, slump, and full. She then explains how to program the table top kiln with each temperature setting that is used for the different techniques. She demonstrates the process which starts with the raw glass going in, and finishes with the completed project after the glass has been fused.

Katherine shares how dichroic glass (a special glass made of metals or oxides) can be incorporated into your glass fusing in addition to a bonus section that she refers to as her “pony tricks”.

It is important to note that there will not be any lessons on making a mosaic in this course. This is strictly a course describing how to use the proper glass for fusing, and how to have successful fusings of all different shapes and sizes. At the end of this course Katherine shares pictures of her large scale glass fusings that she has been commissioned to create on a variety of murals.

This course will save you years of trial and error. Using simple concise directions, Katherine reveals the mysteries of fusing glass and owning and operating a kiln. There is so much that can be created with fused glass pieces for any kind of mosaic. You will be able to create amazing things with this knowledge. You can expect success as you follow the instructions for the creation of small objects such as eyes and flowers, to larger objects used for murals. The course also shares many ideas and resources for your future projects. You can watch this course over and over and find new inspiration every time.
