Mosaic Arts Online is thrilled to present Rachel Davies’ online course, “Slate Mosaic.”
Rachel’s unique and expressive approach to creating mosaic art with slate has attracted hundreds of students from around the world. Rachel has practiced and honed her specific techniques for working with a variety of slate materials from around the world.
Rachel is from Scotland where certain types of slate are abundant and popular. Rachel has also worked with slate from the US and other locations worldwide.
Rachel is an excellent instructor who excels at demystifying how to work with and incorporate slate into mosaic art work. This course is full of so much information as Rachel breaks down her methods for creating with this beautiful material.
In this course you will learn about:
- The best type of slate to work with and where to find it
- The tools needed for breaking and cutting the slate
- Other materials to add to your slate mosaic
- A variety of ways to cut and break the slate
- How to mix the thin set/mortar for the best consistency
- How to add mesh and mortar to the edges of your substrate
- Seven different samples of Rachel’s slate mosaics, and see a demonstration of each one
You will watch Rachel work in “real time” as she uses one substrate to create seven different designs using slate, Italian smalti, and glass tiles. By watching her create this sample piece, you will learn each of these approaches. This will give you the knowledge to create larger single designs for your future works.
This course is designed for both a beginner or someone with more experience. Having this course in your collection will give you the opportunity to refer back to any section over and over again. It is like having Rachel virtually there day or night, no matter what time zone.
There is a full PDF for download with a suggested list of tools, materials, and resources for the US and Europe.
Your Instructor
I am a mosaic artist based in Dunblane, Scotland. I use a range of materials in my work, particularly those which allow me to create texture and dimension. Slate is one of my favourite materials to use - it is strong yet delicate, and can contain a range of colours and surfaces. I also love using stone and smalti (a special type of glass for mosaics).
I love inspiring others to get creative and I enjoy teaching regular workshops from my home studio. I believe that the process of making a mosaic can be therapeutic, whether it is the mindfulness and relaxation that comes from concentrating on placing individual pieces, or the social interactions that arise from working as part of a group.
I am a professional member and Chair of the British Association for Modern Mosaic (BAMM)
