Have you ever seen gorgeous driftwood art and thought how can I do that? Well now is your chance to create driftwood end-grain mosaics with one of the best driftwood artists around, Cortnie Alter. Cortnie creates a variety of driftwood art, and now she has brought her special end-grain mosaic style to Mosaic Arts Online. For her project she uses a heart substrate to teach this technique, and Cortnie breaks down all the mystery of how to create this one-of-a-kind piece of art. This project strays only slightly from our traditional mosaic art techniques, but it is still about creating a piece of art using wood as your material or tesserae. You will learn how to lay each piece so that you have a cohesive and successful project. There is no andamento in this project, but you will learn composition, balance, and color values based on each of the end-grain pieces and where they are placed.
Once you learn how to create the heart, any substrate can be used! You can find different substrate shapes at your local craft store, or for a fee Cortnie can custom cut most substrate shapes. If you don't have a chop saw to cut the end-grains, Cortnie sells a kit of the pre-cut driftwood pieces needed for your project.
There is also a kit of materials available for purchase. Once delivered, you can have your end-grain mosaic heart created in a couple of days. This online course is perfect for learning to create multiple end-grain driftwood mosaics for gifts or to decorate your home. Once purchased, you will be able to refer to this course as often as you like and watch the video again and again.
There is a downloadable PDF with a list of all the tools, materials, and resources. Or one can visit the link to buy the kit directly from Cortnie's Etsy shop, Madera del Mar.
Hi I'm Cortnie and I’m the owner, creator and maker of Madera
Since 2008 I’ve been creating with driftwood.
That year I had actually been laid off from my job, and with funds being tight I decided to
make driftwood wreaths as handmade Christmas gifts.
One wreath led to another and quickly became my passion and business.
Growing up, I was without a doubt inspired by my grandfather Hobie. He was the founder of Hobie Surf and Catamaran. My grandpa has been a huge role model in business and in life; and I’m so thankful he passed down his enthusiasm to create...and most importantly to believe in your vision..
So I was raised by this ocean loving family, and from a small child a solid love for the sea was inevitably ingrained in me.
Steeped in this creative history and a family tradition of artisan woodwork...and a connection to the sea, Madera del Mar simply is an extension of me!
Working with driftwood has allowed me to infuse the breathtaking California Coast into every corner of my life; it’s truly a dream come true, and I’m so grateful to be able to share my passion with you.
